10 Easy Tips For Beginning Guitar
10 Easy Tips For Beginning Guitar Suzy S. For music lovers, theres nothing quite like the Grammy awards, and last night certainly didnt disappoint. But it was one simple quote from Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl that really made an impression on us. In his acceptance speech for Best Rock Performance, Grohl said humbly, To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is whatâs most important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, thatâs the most important thing for people to do. Its not about being perfect, its not about sounding absolutely correct, its not about what goes on in the computer, its about what goes on in [your heart] and its about what goes on in [your head]. We couldnt have said it better. Passion, inspiration, motivation thats what its all about. Forget flashy performances and shock value you can do great things with just an acoustic guitar and well-crafted lyrics. Yet for some reason, many of us out there still think up excuses for not picking up the guitar. We say were too busy, its too hard, we dont have any other musical training, and it hurts our fingers. In actuality, its really quite simple. If you want to learn the guitar, do it. It doesnt matter if youre ten years old or sixty years old anyone can learn to play, and anyone can make time to practice. As Grohl said, you dont have to be perfect. Just start simply. Take it one step at a time. And for a little extra guidance, here are 10 guitar tips for the absolute beginner: 1 â" Make sure you choose the right guitar for your size. Guitars come in different sizes from classic to jumbo. It is very important that you find a guitar size that you are comfortable playing. 2 â" Learn how to change your guitar strings. The dirt and oil on your fingers and hands builds up on your strings over time and will ruin their sound. It is therefore extremely important that you learn how to change your strings. How often you change them will depend on how often you play. 3 â" Build up those calluses. Many beginners complain of pain in their fingertips when first starting out. This is normal and will go away after you have been playing for a little while and start to form calluses. The more often you practice the faster you will build up calluses. 4 â" Learn how to tune your guitar. Make sure your guitar is in tune before you start every practice session. Tuning your guitar is really quite easy. You can either purchase one of those small battery powered guitar tuners, or you can easily find a tuner online. 5 â" Find a good guitar teacher. While it is possible to learn at your own pace at home using free guitar lessons online, books and guitar home study courses, nothing can really replace a guitar teacher. A guitar teacher will help keep you from forming bad guitar playing habits and praise you when you are making progress. 6 â" Stretch and warm up your hands and fingers before each playing session. This is important. Proper warm up and stretching exercises are essential in helping you avoid injury and improving your guitar playing. 7 â" Learn about the parts of your guitar. Spend as much time as possible familiarizing yourself with all the various parts of your guitar and how it is constructed. 8 â" Donât overdo it. If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort during your playing or practice session, stop and take a break. 9 â" Try to learn something new. If you continually do the same thing, day after day, then your guitar playing will become stagnant and you will not progress. 10 â" Go to live performances. This will give you a chance to get up close and personal with the musicians, enabling you to see first-hand how a professional plays. See what we mean? Start out simple, and pretty soon youll be working your way up to the more complicated chords and songs. Do you have your own tips to share? Leave us a comment! Like these posts? Tutors are like private teachers who dedicate themselves to teach pupils in a small group or one on one. Tutors guide and instruct students to create their own successful outcomes by giving them the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and in life. They provide personalized outlines, adaptive study plans, curriculums and syllabusâ to enrich your learning experience. Motivating you the learner to apply these strategies in the subjects that you are struggling in. You can find all kinds of tutors, the online tutor and the 1 on 1 home tutor, are some of the more popular types of tutoring available. Many certified school teachers are also applying for tutoring jobs, indepen dently and with tutoring companies. You may be able to ask around at your school to see if any school teachers work part time as tutors. This could save you some money as they may be partially subsidised by your school. While this is promising there may also be a pupil waiting list to see that school teacher as qualified tutors are in high demand.Private tutors often arrange sessions to last anywhere up to one hour and they normally charge hourly. There is definitely a larger expense related to home tuition, one to one sessions cost more than online tuition. To save money with your supplementary education you could try to use a blended approach to your tutoring finding a good mix between meeting a tutor online and face to face. You Will Find A Tutor Can Essentially Only Show You The Door, But You Have To Walk Through It. Private tutors whether 1 on 1 or online, can show you how to prepare, share with you the right tools for the job and show you how to use the tools. But in the end, you have to decide if you will actually apply what you have been taught.Despite The Tutors Expertise, They Cannot Read Minds. Like all people, tutors can only work with what they know. If you hire a tutor to create your home tutoring programme and guide you in learning how to cook, you should not be surprised if they donât include how to write cookbooks. This may be a related topic, but unless you have shared your expectations, goals and wishes with the tutor to want to expand the curriculum to other related topics, then you may find them left out of your sessions.Make notes and use your study skills. Photo Source: UnsplashTutees in Need of Extra School SupportA tutee is a student or learner who works with a tutor towards achieving their maximum potential. The success of all tutoring services starts with the student. While the tutor is experienced, professional and ready to guide the tutee to victory. If the tutee doesnât attend the sessions or engage with the curriculum, there can be no success despite how skilled the tutor is.The tutee, in this case, holds the keys to their own academic success, and they must be open to guidance and be willing to work to achieve it. When an experienced tutor and a dedicated tutees come together, the ability to accomplish anything that they put their minds to becomes a proven reality. The Tutor and Tutee Relationship7 Tips To Be A Better TuteeNo partnership works without hard work, and this couldnât be truer when it comes to private tuition. To achieve your goals you have to do your part. Follow these steps to make the most of your education, become a better tutee and support your tutor in guiding you toward your highest potential.Communicate EffectivelyLike we mentioned above your tutor will guide you anywhere that you want to go. They will work to give you the tools to do the best that you are capable of. But it is vital to note that until you share with your tutor what goal or outcome you are expecting they will only be able to lead you generally. The power of working with a personal tutor 1 on 1 is to get the most out of the session. You need to have a consultation with the tutor before hiring them, sharing what your expectations are, what you hope to achieve and it could also be vital for them to know how you plan to use your knowledge once it is acquired.Once you start your sessions with your tutor, you should make sure to continue to communicate with them effectively. This is especially true if your goals or requirements change. Tutors can be very flexible and can even recreate the whole curriculum to suit your new requirements. If you choose not to communicate, then you are losing out a tremendous opportunity to be provided with the very best and most personal mentoring available.Engage With The SessionsMake sure to arrange your meetings at a time that you can actually attend punctually. Tutor scheduling is not suggested, and you will pay for the time that you have booked. Ensure that you co mmit to arriving on time to all of your sessions. This means coming 5-10 minutes early so that you have time to set up and prepare manually for the session. When the session starts, you should make sure that you have everything you need to complete the course successfully. This could include textbooks, pens, post-its and study guides. To avoid any distraction while studying in the session you should, as a rule, turn off all electronic devices, i.e. your mobile telephone and at the very least turn of all notifications. For the time that you are with your tutor, there should be no distractionsBeing ready for your session is paramount to your success. That is why your Superprof offers this guide to selecting and working with tutors.Make Notes And Study SkillsWhile you are studying and learning your new skill, ensure that you are also spending some time to take detailed notes of what was discussed, what thoughts you have about the topic and write down any breakthroughs you have experience d. If you need to slow down to take more extensive notes, ask the tutor to give you a few minutes so that you can take notes on anything that you deem essential. It is important to remember that the tutor is hired to go at your pace, you are not in the session to follow the speed of the tutor. If you need time to write notes take the time.Increase Comprehension With Short Session ReviewsOnce your session has finished, go to a quiet place where you can concentrate and round up what you have learned by reviewing it thoroughly. Make sure that now that you are alone and that it all seems as clear as it was in class. If you can try to expand on what you have learned with homework or personal study.Looking over your notes and rewriting them can also really help with concreting what it is that you have learnt to memory. This is important because often the issue is not learning the topic the problem often comes down to remembering what we have discovered. While your tutor can do a review with you at the start of the lesson it should be noted that the best time to retain the knowledge of your session is after the session itself.Be RealisticIf you hire a tutor to help you do exam prep or pass an exam one week before the exam and you know nothing about the topic. It is pretty likely that you are being unrealistic. Even though your tutor will be able to put together an intensive program that could give you a chance. Your best hope is planning in advance and giving yourself time, learning takes time, and remembering and being able to digest what you have learnt can take time also. It is essential to understand our own limitations and manage our expectations accordingly.Although the tutor is guiding you every step of the way in how to learn and what to learn you are still the one who has to do the work. The tutor cannot turn you into someone you are not overnight.Take Some Time OffIt may sound counter-intuitive but make sure that while you are studying that you take a regular study break and at least once a week, every week take some time out to relax and do some fun things that you enjoy. While you should be passionate and enthusiastic about your home tuition programme. Relaxing is as essential as studying is for your success, as it gives your brain a break and an opportunity to recuperate. There are various benefits to taking long and short study breaks including increased concentration and faster learning. Although working excessively hard and âcrammingâ is what is typically seen as an efficient way of studying. This promotes exhaustion, stress, fatigue and a lower retention rate. That means that the longer you study without a break, the less you learn and the worse you feel. Even taking a 5-minute break every hour can have positive effects. Remember at the end of the school year you a lot of time free and so can commit to a more intensive program and still enjoy your spare time.Have Confidence In Your TutorSometimes it can all seem too much and b ecome overwhelming, but your tutor is there to support you, and so you should not give up. Whether you progress is slow or fast, all progress is good progress. If your tutor is aware of your strengths and weaknesses, they will be actively coming up with customized strategies for students. Make sure to reward yourself for small successes and speak to your tutor to ask them how you are progressing and if there are any other strategies you could use to advance more efficiently.Your private tutor actively comes up with customized strategies for students. Photo Source: UnsplashOne on one tutoring can make you feel like your knight in shining armour has arrived. Private tutors are extremely passionate about their subjects and this knowledge and professionalism can introduce enrichment and mastery into your learning experience. It is important to realise though that your tutor is only going to give you the tools and guide you towards your success. Fundamentally you are the one responsibl e for taking the first step and applying it to everything you learn. This is a powerful realisation to accept, but you must commit to keep improving. We hope that you have enjoyed our top tips on how to make the most of your home tuition. If you are able to apply just a few of these pointers, then you will be on track to becoming best student possible, and you will achieve success in your topic.Invest in your success by evaluating your tutor to make sure s/he and your child will work well together for a long time.
5 French Holidays to Celebrate This Spring and Summer
5 French Holidays to Celebrate This Spring and Summer Suzy S. When in France, party like the French do! Whether youre preparing to study abroad or you just want to bring a little piece of France into your home, French tutor Carol Beth L.s guide to French holidays this spring and summer will give you something to celebrate French holidays share some similarities with American holidays, but they arent all exactly the same â" nor do they occur at the same time. If youre looking for some fun French festivities, here are a few spring and summer holidays to celebrate. 1) Heure dété Daylight Savings Time Daylight savings time isnt really a holiday, but it is something to which everyone in France must pay attention, just as we do in the United States. Frances daylight savings time change also occurs on a Sunday, but not the same Sunday as in the United States. Usually, we Americans turn our clocks forward about a week before the French do. As a result, for about a week every spring, the time difference between the two countries diminishes from eight hours to seven. 2) Pâques Easter Easter is traditionally a religious holiday which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Though France like the United States has gradually become more diverse and secular over the years, France is traditionally a Catholic country. Even after many French Revolutionaries criticized the Catholic Church for corruption at the end of the 18th century, Napoleon brought it back in the early 1800s. In 1980, 80% of the French population identified as Catholic. Today, many statistics put the number at a similar percentage, but the number who actually go to church has decreased and religious diversity, as well as the number of religiously-unaffiliated people, is rising. Even so, just as in the US where many Americans may celebrate Christmas and Easter without attending church, many French do the same. 3) La Fête de lAscension Ascension Day La Fête de lAscension (Ascension Day) is also a traditionally Christian holiday, but in France, it is also a public holiday. It celebrates the day Jesus ascended to heaven, forty days after rising from the dead. Like Easter, its roots (naturally) come from Frances Catholic past. Regardless of religious affiliation, however, most French people appreciate the day off! 4) La Fête du Travail Labor Day Labor Day in the United States doesnt come until September. In France, however, it occurs in May, the same month we celebrate Memorial Day. But while we celebrate Memorial Day towards the end of the month, the French celebrate Labor Day at the beginning â" on May 1st. 5) La Fête Nationale Bastille Day We celebrate our independence day on the 4th of July. The French celebrate theirs 10 days later on the 14th of July, better known as Bastille Day. On that day in 1789, French revolutionaries, mostly from French societys lower classes, stormed the Bastille a fortress and prison in Paris. For revolutionaries, it stood for the nobility and clergys hypocrisy and corruption, as the French clergy and nobility strongly influenced government of the day. Although many French were inspired by Americas revolution, their revolutions bloodiness shocked many Americans and other Europeans. Still, it set France on a zig-zag course between monarchy and representative government, finally ending with the forced abdication of its last king, Charles Philip I, in 1848. Due to a few additional interruptions stemming from wars with (and invasions from) neighboring countries, France is now in its 5th republic, which began with President Charles de Gaulle following World War II. If youre studying French in the US, look out for opportunities to celebrate with the French community in your area, especially on Bastille Day. This tends to be a favorite celebration for French and francophiles abroad. Discover more about French language and culture when you study with a French tutor. Should I Go to Fullerton College
Should I Go to Fullerton College Diana is a current senior at Fullerton College. She is majoring in criminal justice, and specializes in Spanish tutoring, phonics tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Fullerton College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Diana: Fullerton College is situated in an urban area. Students use bikes, skateboards, buses, and cars to get around campus. I always feel safe on campus, regardless of the time of day or night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Diana:The professors' office hours are typically indicated at the beginning of the year in the syllabus. Most of them let you visit their hours whenever, though, as long as you let them know a day or so in advance that you will be coming in for help. Even online professors are very accessible to students. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Diana:The dining options on campus are somewhat on the fast food side, but still provide a variety of options for students. If students venture into town, there are many other restaurants for students to enjoy. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Diana:My major, criminal justice, is well supported. Other majors are as well, including cosmetology, marketing, and the mechanical industry. I fell in love with criminal justice at a very young age, and when I took my first class in the department, I knew it was the right path for me. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Diana:Its fairly easy to make friends on campus. There are many organizations students can get involved in on campus to meet others. Greek life is not very present at Fullerton. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Diana:The Career Center staff are very helpful. They are there to give students advice and assistance with the job search, as well as review resumes. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Diana:The library and study spaces are great on campus. They get busy around finals week, but are generally very inviting spaces for students to study in. Describe the surrounding town. Diana:Disneyland is very close to Fullertons campus. Additionally, there are places to eat, watch movies, and go shopping near campus. Its a very nice area to attend school; theres always something fun going on. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Diana:I typically take early-morning classes, so the sizes of my classes are fairly small. I love the intimacy of the smaller-sized classes. However, I do know that there are larger lecture courses offered on campus as well. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Diana:I have loved every class, even the ones I struggled with. If I had to choose one of my favorites, I would choose my CSI class. I loved the work we did, I loved my teacher, and I loved all of the material we learned in the class. Check out Dianas tutoring profile. Signs Students Need Outside Tutoring
Signs Students Need Outside Tutoring Its probably pretty obvious when a student is struggling in class, but as you know, getting that child help sooner than later is crucial. Here are a few signs that one of your students needs tutoring help: The student is very behind. When students fall behind, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to catch back up, especially if the class moves at a fast pace. Also, falling behind tends to be a cumulative problem that worsens with time. The student is disengaged. Students who are disruptive, uninterested, or even angry often have something else going on that requires addressing. It could be that theyre embarrassed about their school struggles. Apathy is a big red flag that shouldnt be ignored. The student performs poorly on tests and quizzes. When a students homework grades are acceptable but they get low test grades, you might be dealing with poor exam prep and study skills. The student struggles to work on pace. Some students work quickly while others take their time. This is to be expected, but if you have a student who consistently takes longer than seems reasonable to do tasks, supplemental tutoring might help them learn where they can be more efficient and build skills theyre missing. Your efforts to reach the student arent working. Maybe youve tried talking with a student and his parent, but your attempts have been ignored or met with resistance.
